My name is Rich Borsuk and I am married with two kids, a boy, and a girl and they’re both older nowadays! My daughter lives in Scottsdale, AZ and is married with two sons and my son lives in Denver, CO, he’s married is well, and just had his first son! It’s nice that they’re both reasonably close and we’ve got one in the mountains, one in the desert, and then we’re here by the ocean. I’m originally from the westside and grew up in the Palisades/Brentwood area and then went to Paul Revere Junior High and then Pali for high school.
About Richard Bor
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My wife and I have been married for 40 years, she’s worked for me in the past and she used to be a fit model in the clothing industry. She drives me and is my inspiration, my muse. She’s great b/c she’s super motivated and a super hard worker and she really drives me to be better. My daughter works for a commercial Real Estate firm in Arizona and my son does social media for a bamboo toilet paper company. They’re both just killing it and doing a great job. My dad was originally from the Bronx and was a carpet installer in New York and after the war he followed my mom out to California, who had come out here with her parents. He started working for a carpet/furniture store and ultimately ended up starting his own company here in Inglewood. And then him and a partner got together and they just started expanding to a point where I think the maximum number of stores they had was 22, spanning from Oxnard to San Fernando Valley to Laguna Niguel…just tons of stores. They really had cornered the market until some of the larger chains like Home Depot, etc moved into the industry and it really hurt the “mom and pop” type stores.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I’ve always been in sales since I got out of college and originally I was selling clothing in the evenings and carpet during the day. Finally, my dad said I had to dump the clothing deal and he needed me full time. This is probably my future…retirement is when I’m not having fun anymore. I love dealing with customers and doing what I do. I make a lot of friends with the people that we sell to and I’ve developed a lot of great relationships with our clients. When you deal with people constantly, you find those people that you share common ground with. Just the other day a customer was in and they commented on the Ferrari logo on my backpack and it just spun off into a conversation about cars and racing and it was fantastic.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Just enjoy your life, because it goes quick. Before you know it, time goes by in a second and so you better enjoy every day that you can.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Seeing my kids and grandkids more, traveling with them. That would probably be an ideal situation and just hang out in the areas where my kids live.
Richard Bor & Our Community
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
It’s just slightly outside of Manhattan Beach but probably my favorite Mexican restaurant right now is Calo Kitchen on Rosecrans. It’s well prepared, healthier, and it’s a really good quality Mexican food. FROM INTERVIEWER: Try the pork and pineapple tacos!
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
35 years or more now.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
–
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Again this is going to be a little outside of MB but it was an institution for years, Admiral Risty’s in Palos Verdes. They also used to own a burger place on PCH called Woody’s and you could put whatever you wanted on your hamburgers. I definitely have a lot of nostalgia for Woody’s.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
Just how nice everyone in the beach areas are. When I moved to this location from my previous store, the surrounding community has been so welcoming and they want to give the local people business. They really believe in shopping local.
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Well…I’m a HUGE music fan and I love concerts, all live music and my number one band that I’ve seen multiple times is The Rolling Stones so I would have to say Mick Jagger. He probably has a million stories about everything and I would love to ask him a ton of questions about his life. It would be really cool to talk to him and I think we’d go to Terranea and just have drinks and lunch facing the ocean.
For Fun
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
We have been binging Echo Three on Apple TV and Hijack with Idris Elba.
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I’m an open book. Hmmm…if I didn’t end up in this career I would have loved to have been a manager or a booking agent in the music industry. Finding new talent seems like an amazing opportunity and I love turning people on to music that they don’t know.
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
10 out of 10 is music. The most amazing thing is when I can see and hear something that I didn’t expect.
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My wife, she always kind of picks apart things that need improvement with me and she always tells me the truth and she really pushes me everyday. She inspires me. She inspired me to create a vision board and I did, and it changed my life. It changed everything around me and it just pushed me into hyperdrive.
Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Warm, comfortable, and the place you always unwind and recenter yourself.
